ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: WHAT IT MEANS FOR US – YouTube
A WIN Discussion, October 2023. Recent strides forward in technology offer the potential to eliminate forever virtually every form of physical and mental drudgery. Hardly a decade ago, such phenomena as chatbots and self-drive cars would have seemed magical fantasies. But these and other more complex manifestations of Artificial Intelligence also threaten to destroy millions of livelihoods; generate false or deliberately toxic misinformation; and, according to more alarmist predictions, even slip outside human control and pose an existential threat to humanity. Zisis Sourlas is a member of the Internationalist Standpoint group and a student of Computer Engineering at the University of Patras in Greece. He will speak about the scientific development and growing impact of AI with the release of ChatGPT and other AI tools. He will focus on the future dangers posed by these devices and the possible ethical, societal and legal issues involved: their possible impact on unemployment and wages; their effect on the workplace under capitalism; the limits of these technologies; whether or not they risk “outsmarting” people; and what a Marxist approach to this issue should be.
