WIN Discussion March 2025. Watch the meeting HERE.
Eight months ago, Labour won an overwhelming majority of seats in Britain’s general election. But this so-called “landslide” victory had been gained on the votes of just 20% of registered voters; and now Labour’s support is plummeting still further in opinion polls and local by-elections. But just a few years ago, under a further left leadership, Labour had grown to be the biggest political party in Europe. It was winning record high votes, holding mass rallies, and attracting a generation of youth. Is the Labour Party finished? Will it go the way of Germany’s Social Democrats, who in last week’s elections won their lowest vote since 1887, and of their sister parties in France, Scandinavia and the rest of Europe? Can it be revived? Can it be replaced? Why have attempts so far to build alternative left parties failed? How can a mass workers’ party be built? These are vital questions for socialists, not only in Britain but worldwide.
To open this discussion, we welcomed the celebrated British left campaigner AUDREY WHITE. In 1983 Audrey led the historic strike against sexual harassment at a Liverpool clothing store which changed British law on sexual discrimination. In 2020 she won an apology and substantial damages against the Jewish Chronicle in a landmark libel case for falsely branding her an anti-Semite. And in 2022 the video of her denunciation of Keir Starmer on the fringes of the 2022 Labour Party conference went viral. SEE (https://www.counterfire.org/article/a…)
