In 2022, Sri Lanka went bankrupt. Now – for the seventeenth time in the country’s history – the International Monetary Fund has intervened yet again, this time with a still more devastating programme. It is forcing the country to shrink its economy, privatise its remaining state-owned enterprises, and impose still more crippling taxes on its people. The illegitimate government – having grabbed power through a constitutional loophole following the mass uprising in 2022 (the aragalaya) – is now curtailing basic human rights by forcing through legislation making the IMF programme legally binding. The bitter truth must be revealed to the world and resisted by mass struggle.
