(1) LULA IS BACK! BUT WHICH WAY FORWARD NOW FOR BRAZIL? – YouTube
A Workers’ International Network meeting – November 2022
In a stunning comeback, Lula da Silva, leader of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT, Workers’ Party) has returned to power in Brazil. The results were close, but as the incoming president Lula will come under intense and growing challenges both from the rich elite around Bolsonaro and from below as working people struggle for jobs and security from the ravages of inflation.
Bolsonaro’s disastrous rule let loose a storm of reaction through the deregulation of controls over the Amazon, large-scale privatisations, the abuse of women and a toll of 700,000 deaths from COVID. The PT has only 99 representatives out of 500 in Congress, and Lula’s pledge to eradicate illegal logging and mining has aroused bitter opposition from the ruling class. Ferocious resistance can be expected to any and every one of the reforms proposed by Lula. Only through a full-scale mobilisation of the working class in revived and militant trade unions and democratic mass assemblies can a fighting programme for real change be achieved.
How can the Brazilian working class best organise the fight for jobs, education, housing, health, decent living standards, protection of the Amazon as a national and international resource, and a democratically planned socialist economy? The Workers’ International Network invites you to listen to the discussion and hear Brazilian socialists speak about the choices facing the Brazilian working class, including…
Silvana Harte, a PT militant, and
Fabio Bosco, Brazilian Labour and People’s Federation CSP-Conlutas and PSTU (United Socialist Workers’ Party).
