Around the Mediterranean Sea, all coastal states and some major powers are threatening one another with war over underwater fossil fuel reserves. Energy policies determined not by the needs of society but for private profit are causing both an increase in energy costs for the public and creating the looming spectre of a growing climate catastrophe.
These contentious disputes create a dangerous precedent and threaten the security and lives of people in coastal countries. In response to this disaster, ecology organizations in Cyprus, Turkey, and Greece came together in 2019, proclaiming, “War is the business of rulers, peace is the work of the oppressed.” Since then, the Kazma Bırak / Μας σκάβουν τον λάκκο / Leave it on the Ground Campaign has been involved in various interventions centered around climate justice and peace.
One of the latest actions of the campaign is the caravan of ecology movement gold mining campaigners travelling from Turkey to Thessaloniki, taking place from December 2nd to 6th, 2023.
