Socialist, human rights campaigner, conscientious objector, lawyer, lecturer, Sydney devoted his life to the left; among his many achievements he fought for the admission to the UK of Jewish refugees during the Nazi era and brought the private members’ bill which led to the abolition of hanging in the UK.
