The ruling class is taking every chance to scream its demands that the new Burnham government attack the working class with substantial cuts to government spending. Welfare spending for unemployed, disabled people or pensioners is a particular target – in recent days the move to pay pensioners either £10k or £13k per year from April 2027 depending on which generation of state pension they receive has been greeted with howls of outrage from people who would spend a multiple of that on luxuries annually.
The political instrument of a substantial section of the ruling class has been shifted to the far right – the media’s effort to build a political movement around Nigel Farage has finally borne fruit after twenty years or more and this is predictably pulling the entire mangy political edifice of bourgeois democracy steadily further right behind it. The Tory Party has atrophied to a husk as it has been removed from its position as standard bearer of the right of the ruling class. The fascist international of Bannon and Musk alongside the most predatory ex-pat chancers centred around the criminal crypto currency trade have poured tens of millions into the far right and fascist tendencies.
Against this the working class does want to resist. There is no great enthusiasm for the old racist stuff – anti-racist mobilisations are with occasional exceptions larger than the groups the racists can mobilise. The ruling class foments its demands for war within a handful of years, preferably against Russia , with no backing whatsoever, and there is a steadily increasing majority against the genocide in Gaza and the spreading war in the Middle East. The more class conscious layers have few weapons against the ruling class, and there is little trust in the unions among rank and file workers. The deliberate sabotage of even the minimal Your Party project illustrates exactly the political issues in trying to create a real political party of the working class.
